Yala Wild Safari

Yala Wild Safari

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife sanctuary, home to leopards, elephants, and diverse bird species. Spanning lush forests, grasslands, and coastal areas, it offers thrilling safari experiences. Explore its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity.

Yala Park History

Yala (Ruhuna) National Park, the second largest and most visited national park in Sri Lanka, spans an impressive 151,778 hectares across five blocks, with Block I open to the public. Located about 300 kilometers from Colombo, the park’s mildly undulating landscape rises from the coast to elevations of 100-125 meters inland. The best time to visit Yala is from February to July, when water levels are low, enhancing wildlife visibility. Yala is steeped in history, housing ancient monastic settlements like Situlpahuwa, and significant Buddhist sites such as the 1st-century BC Magul Maha Vihara and the 2nd-century BC Akasa Chetiya, part of the ancient Ruhunu kingdom.

Yala’s diverse habitats—ranging from dry monsoon forests and scrub jungles to freshwater lakes, rivers, and beaches—support an incredible variety of wildlife. Visitors are likely to encounter Sloth Bears, herds of Asian Elephants, Buffalos, Monkeys, Sambar Deer, and the endangered Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya). Known for one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, Yala West is an internationally recognized spot for observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, making it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Apart from its rich wildlife, Yala is designated as one of Sri Lanka’s 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs), making it a sanctuary for bird enthusiasts. The park boasts over 215 bird species, including six endemic species, and becomes a vibrant migratory bird hotspot from October to April, coinciding with the Northern Hemisphere’s winter. Birdwatchers can look forward to spotting fascinating species like the Crested Serpent Eagle and the White-Bellied Sea Eagle, along with a diverse array of other avifauna. With its varied ecosystems and incredible biodiversity, Yala National Park offers an unmatched experience for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.
